Polk Street by DJ Olive set to release april 11 2016 on Record Blanks
After 2 years of touring, in 2005 DJ Olive found himself in San Fran heartbroken sleeping on Escape Art’s Polk Street studio couch. His longtime friend and collaborator Ignacio Platas aka Once11 arrived from 2 years in the Costa Rican jungle making bamboo homes. He had fallen in love and was on his way to meet her on the Brooklyn bridge six weeks later. Once11 worked nights and Olive days at the Escape Art studio. Six weeks later Once11 had Produced Smile Hunter, released on the Agriculture in ’06. Olive produced this record Polk Street which was left deep within a folder within a folder within a folder on a somewhat old and battered titanium laptop. A year later when olive went for a lunch break at the Skin Tone Riddles studio in Greenpoint Brooklyn he came back to find he had been robbed. In a cold sweat he grabbed a metal floor scraper and ran down the stairwell to the street in time to see three blocks up Manhattan avenue a man with Olive’s Yakpack disappear onto a side street. Olive caught up and held the floor scraper out and said “I got to have that computer… its the only copy of my record”. Many years later, deep in the Canadian Rockies, biking into town at 5:30 am to work on music in the basement of the local co-op radio station this record would again just escape oblivion. It was winter and there was much ice and snow. Olive had become used to this but coming around an outside downhill turn perfectly balanced in the still morning air suddenly a skunk darted out into the road and froze then spun and froze again, its tail pointing. Olive swerved just a fraction but it was enough to set the bike side-slipping out from under him. With one thought in his head he leaped spread eagle like a skydiver to land on his chest, backpack riding safely on his back, sliding down the snow packed road a good 100 yards, his eyes locked on the tail of the skunk as he passed. Yes in the backpack was the only copy of this record Polk Street. It is with great pleasure that Record Blanks can make this beautiful record of beat impressions, a kind of under the radar poetry of sound, available to all.
